Dental Implants

Missing tooth is a huge letdown. It can lead to a lot of embarrassment when you smile or converse with your loved ones. If that wasn’t enough, it also affects the person’s ability to bite and chew food and their phonetics. This calls for an effective replacement to restore both the aesthetics as well as the functionality of the mouth.

Dental implants are considered as the best replacement for natural teeth by dentists all over the world. They are strong, long lasting and look exactly like natural teeth, placing them a notch above their obvious alternatives such as dental bridges and dentures. Our dental team has treated several patients with missing teeth in the past and has helped them regain their lost smile and confidence.

Is it necessary to replace a missing tooth?

Absolutely! Missing teeth pose several disadvantages, both from the aesthetic and functional point of view. Some of them are as follows:

  • When a tooth is extracted, a gap maybe left in the jawbone where the tooth is missing. This allows the adjoining teeth to drift from their sockets into the empty space, bringing about a change in the shape of the jaws and the face as well.
  • When teeth start to drift from their positions, it changes their alignment with the remaining teeth and causes malocclusion. Further, the remaining teeth may loosen from their sockets and could lead to further tooth loss.
  • The teeth right next to the extracted tooth may face increased levels of stress due to excessive forces applied on them. This can cause toothache and potential TMJ disorder. Also, the particular teeth face too much wear in comparison to the other teeth.
  • Most disturbing of all, missing teeth leave a displeasing appearance on one’s smile. Patients who have lost their frontal teeth think twice before even smiling and would always be conscious of revealing it when they socialize.

But why choose dental implants?

Dental implants offer several advantages that other tooth replacement solutions cannot, such as the following:

  • Since implants are a combination of a Titanium root and a visible ceramic crown, they effectively replace the tooth in its entirety. This way, a gap won’t be left in the jawbone which allows the remaining teeth to drift.
  • Their appearance perfectly mimics that of the natural teeth. Even if someone takes a closer look at your implant, they wouldn’t have the faintest clue that it maybe a restoration.
  • Implants are strong and durable. They effectively restore the patient’s ability to bite and chew food, and also improve phonetics. With proper maintenance, they would last several years without a hassle.

How is an implant surgery done?

The dentist would carefully screen your mouth and consider several factors before suggesting an implant to replace your extracted tooth. Some of them are the gum health, jawbone density, spacing available, if the teeth have drifted from their positions, etc. During the surgery, local anesthesia would be given to the gums to numb the entire oral area and prevent discomfort.

The implant, which is made from titanium, will be inserted into a hole that is made in the jawbone. It will be fixed firmly using dental adhesives. After the implant site heals, which usually takes six to eight weeks, the ceramic crown will be placed on it. If required, the crown will be polished to match the color and texture of the adjacent teeth.
